When you refer business, there's always risks involved after all, you're endorsing the quality of work or product that businesses will provide. You might be worried about a screwup somewhere along the way. For example, "what if the housecleaner recommends up being someone who steals from them?"
When you provide and prove to someone that you will go above and beyond, you instill in him or her confidence in you. You walk the walk and talk the talk, giving them no reason to believe you'd ever act anything short of first class.
Cultivating the kind of reputation is worth 10 times and money and spend a tradeshow or marketing. It minimizes risk, and when risk is minimized, people become more comfortable with the idea of sticking out their next for you.
Let's face it, having a client say he or she will refer a friend than actually doing it are two totally different things.
One raving fan is worth more than 100 satisfied customers the raving fans going to bring you 10 or 20 or 30 leads, whereas a customer who is merely satisfied isn't likely to advocate passionately about your business to anyone he or she comes in contact with.
That's why it's important to give your client something that will enable them to be able to talk about you. What do you give to your clients that ensures that they will be able to send you referrals for decades to come? At the end of the deal do you give them a bottle of wine, basket of fruit, cash? None of those things sparks conversations about you.
